“Do my moles look okay, or should I be concerned?” 

In general, moles or nevi are very common and can be found on almost every adult. They may have many different characteristics, some of which may warrant a second opinion by a clinician. Routine full body skin exams are recommended for the average adult; an experienced eye can detect early abnormalities.

Even though it is normal for your moles to vary slightly in appearance, a general rule of thumb when examining them is to look for the ABCDEs of skin cancer like Melanoma:

Asymmetry- One half of the lesion is not a mirror image of the other half

Border- An irregular or ill-defined border

Color- Your mole should be one uniform color, although some benign moles may vary in color

Diameter- a mole that is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) should be further examined

Evolution- is your mole changing in size, shape or color? Typically this mole or skin lesion will stand out from the rest

There are both genetic and environmental factors which may increase a person’s likelihood of developing skin cancer. If a person has an atypical mole they are said to carry a 3-20 fold elevated risk of developing melanoma than the general population. Approximately 10 percent of melanomas are genetic. Sun or ultraviolet exposure increases a person’s lifetime risk as well; a strong association with adolescent/childhood sunburns and melanoma is high. UV exposure in an individual’s teens or twenties was associated with a 75 percent increase in melanoma. 

A full-skin exam by a qualified provider will aid in diagnosing basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and atypical moles which may develop into melanomas. While monthly self-examinations are encouraged, many patients are unable to closely monitor areas like the back, posterior legs and arms, and other areas not easily seen by the individual.

It’s been over 8 years since we first opened our door to patients.  Our objectives were the same then as they are now: 1) provide high quality dermatologic care and 2) provide superior customer service.  Our staff works hard and strives to be the best they can be each and every day for our patients.

After 8 years, technology changes and we like to change with it.  Today, our website has been completely refreshed to maximize your experience no matter what device you are using (phone, tablet, computer).

All of our same great features are available in our new refresh, but some of our commonly used features have become more prominent and easy to find including access to the Patient Portal and Online Scheduling.

As always, we appreciate the reception our patients are giving us at all of our locations and the immense outpouring of positive feedback our patients give directly back to us really drives home how important our purpose is to you.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all of our staff, providers, friends, family and patients!

As we reflect back on 2015, there has been a lot of changes in healthcare and our office has added a lot of enhancements for our patients.  Let’s review some of the most impactful:

✓ Electronic Check-in: In January 2015, we installed and integrated iPad kiosk check-in systems for our patients, which we have now extended to all 3 locations.  The kiosks provide the following major benefits to our patients:

  1. Allows for multiple patients to be checking in at the same time, limited only by the number of kiosks, so that our patients have to wait less time in line.  
  2. Allows our patients to verify their demographic information for accuracy and update their contact information, thus reducing errors.
  3. Allows patients the option to update their insurance information and scan any new cards.
  4. Allows the staff to collect medical information upfront and confidentially to make your visit more productive.
  5. Allows you to setup your preferred pharmacy location so that your perscriptions can be sent in efficiently at the end of your visit.
  6. Allows you the option to pay any outstanding balances by swiping your credit card.

✓ Patient Portal Upgrade: The patient portal is the patient’s way to securely interact with our practice anywhere in the world there is internet access.  Some of the most impactful features are listed below:

  1. Allows the practice to send results to patients that can be accessed 24 hours a day.  Work long hours? Don’t have time to call us during the day?  You can access these results anytime.
  2. Allows the practice to release blood work results directly to the patient.  You can then print them out or keep them for your records or for your other physicians.
  3. Allows the patient to send questions to our staff 24/7.  Don’t have time to call us during the day?  Use this option and we can then answer your questions with a secure message back to you during business hours, which can then be accessed 24/7 in case you don’t have time during the day to read our response.
  4. Need a refill?  You can send a refill request to us 24/7.
  5. Want to view your statement online?  Not only can you review every statement  online (current and previous), you can now pay your statement via credit card securely and directly through the portal instead of sending it to us via snail mail.

✓ Healow App: Want to access most of the patient portal features above plus more from your smart phone?  You can download the new Healow app from the app store and connect it directly to your patient portal.  Go to our patient portal webpage for the access code needed go activate your previously downloaded Healow App (which you can get from the Apple App store or Android's App store).  You can then access many of these features secured by your 4 digit access code that you setup.

And for 2016? We have lots of new enhancements planned that are designed to enhance our patients' dermatologic care. Our first enhancement is online scheduling, which we have been piloting in 2015 and will be expanding dramatically in 2016.  Wouldn’t you rather be able to go online, see if your provider has an available appointment and book it directly online?  Our staff will then confirm your appointment during business hours.  Patients will also be able to see last minute slots that open up from last minute movement in our schedule and patients can book these as well.  Our online scheduling will allow patients to schedule appointments at any time of day or night to see us during business hours.

For those of you who don't know, our practice does see patients on selected Saturdays.  Unfortunately, hazardous road conditions that are expected to get worse overnight will require us to close tomorrow (Saturday, February 28th 2015).

Patients who were scheduled for tomorrow should be receiving a message via their preferred phone number listed in our practice in the next 30 minutes.  Please touch base with our office early next week to reschedule.

We are aware of the inclement weather expected in the areas surrounding our offices.  In most cases of inclement weather in the past, our offices have been open to see patients who feel it is safe to come in to see us.  If we are unable to provide services, we will attempt to contact you using the phone number that was marked on your chart as preferred.  Please make sure to check that particular phone number often.

For 7 years, our team has been working non-stop to help deliver state of the art medical and dermatologic care at our Frisco and Denton, Texas, locations.  Dr. Weisberg and the providers work tirelessly during the day with our excellent team of medical assistants, front office, billing specialists and practice manager to deliver effective and customized care to our thousands of patients who have visited us since we opened our doors.  After hours, Dr. Weisberg continues to excel and spend considerable time devising ways to improve care and efficiency, some of which are obvious to our patients, but others that happen behind to scenes to improve the way we deliver care.

It is with pride and joy that we announce that we have been selected as "Best in D" by D Magazine for 2014.  How do they come to this conclusion?  Great question!  They ask thousands of physicians the following question:

"Which doctors would you trust with the care of a loved one?"              

The physicians, who are verified, are allowed to list up to 3 physicians in each category and we are honored to be picked for Dermatology!

We don't take this lightly.  It means we have lots of physicians who trust us to provide care for their patients.  Some of these physicians have been referring patients to us for 7 years, some who may have started more recently, and others who may have already visited us for their personal care or the care of a family member.  This immense trust that has been afforded to us by physicians (and patients) is our most precious gift along with our awesome staff.

Thank you north Texas.  You can rest assured we will continue to work to find ways to improve and become even better in the future.  We plan to be part of the community for a long time to come and believe this is just the beginning of a great journey solely afforded to us by the trust of our patients and our physicians.
