Squamous Cell Carcinoma Diagnosis & Treatment

Squamous cell carcinomas are the 2nd most common type of skin cancer. At Dermatology Consultants of Frisco, we can help with an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.

Squamous cell carcinomas have several different looks, but are generally red, crusty, eroded, bleeding, and/or ulcerated. They tend to appear in areas that are exposed to the sun but can occur anywhere on the skin.

This type of skin cancer typically grows more rapidly than basal cell carcinomas and can spread to distant sites in the body if left untreated. Squamous cell carcinomas can also become locally destructive and therefore require prompt diagnosis and treatment.

A biopsy is generally used to confirm the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma before further treatment. If the skin cancer has spread to distant sites, more powerful medications are usually required.

A patient who has one skin cancer has a higher likelihood of developing another. After diagnosing any skin cancer, frequent skin checks at one of our Dermatology Consultants of Frisco offices are highly recommended. We recommend that all patients have their skin checked at least once a year for new lesions and any changes.
