Lipomas are located underneath the skin and are collections of fatty cells that typically feel soft and slightly mobile. Lipomas can grow slowly, become tender, and even become unsightly. They are generally considered harmless, but significant growth can make patients uncomfortable.
Examination by your dermatologist can help narrow the diagnosis, but until the lesion is actually removed, confirmation cannot be given since it is located underneath the skin. Removal can be done in the office during a surgical appointment on almost any day after the diagnosis is made and is done through a simple surgical incision, but stitches are typically required.
