Things to Do Everyday to Your Skin

Skincare is important because the skin is the largest barrier between your immune system and possible infection.

Keeping our skin healthy and moisturized helps maintain a healthy acid mantle. This acid mantle consists of natural oils and is slightly acidic in nature to prevent harmful contaminants. By taking care of this mantle, you are protecting your skin from acne, hyperpigmentation, and signs of premature aging.

Thankfully, protecting your skin and its mantle can be done with a skincare routine that includes a face wash, toner, and moisturizer. While the skincare routine has always evolved and affected by trends, the basic three-step routine is the most cost-effective way of protecting your skin.

What to Do Everyday

  1. Wash. Your facial cleanser is what's going to remove dead skin cells, impurities, and excess oils. For people who have particularly dry skin, use a facial cleanser that has natural emollients or humectants. You'll find that an oil-based cleanser can be useful in removing impurities while keeping your acid mantle intact. For oilier skin types, you will want a slightly stringent face wash that is formulated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide if you have acne prone skin. Many people have reactions to various types of cosmetics and lotions. If you have sensitive skin type, use a face wash that is free of parabens, potential irritants, and drying alcohols.
  2. Toner. The toner is an overlooked part of the everyday skincare routine. The skin toner will neutralize any active ingredients that have been left on your skin, soothing the skin and restoring the acid mantle. A mild face toner that is formulated with a witch hazel tends to be universally accepted by most skin types. It acts as a mild astringent to shrink the pores, while actively reducing inflammation. If you have congested skin, then a skin toner that is formulated with a mild acid like salicylic acid can be beneficial to unclog orders and to clear out your sebaceous glands.
  3. Moisturize. Moisturizing after toning will help maintain its balance. People with oily skin types believe that moisturizers contribute to their problem. However, what happens is that the skin becomes dry without proper moisturization, causing it to increase sebum production. Then the person with oily skin responds to that excess production by attacking it with a harsh face wash. The skin becomes dry again, and it becomes a cycle. A moisturizer will make sure that your skin isn't too dry or too oily, that way your sebum glands do not need to be so responsive. Choose your moisturizer based on your skin type, with dryer skin benefiting from emollient based creams, while oily skin types benefiting from lighter lotions.

Specialty Treatments

While your everyday skincare routine is enough to prevent and mitigate most skin issues, you will also benefit from the semi-regular specialty treatment that targets certain skin concerns.
