Dermaplaning and its Benefits

Dermaplaning is a beauty treatment that gently exfoliates the face through the use of an exfoliating scalpel.

The blade skims across the skin's surface, sloughing off dead skin cells, impurities and fine hairs from the face.

Dermaplaning is also referred to as microplaning or simply "blading." It was first described in an article published in The Journal of Dermatological Surgery and Oncology during the 1970s. It proved highly successful in reducing acne vulgaris which stems from inflammation of the pilosebaceous units.

The main objective of dermaplaning is to keep your skin looking smooth, youthful and radiant. The treatment is known to alleviate scars and mitigate unevenness in tone caused by discoloration and acne. As mentioned earlier, dermaplaning is extremely effective in getting rid of “peach fuzz” or fine hairs on the face.

How Does Dermaplaning Work?

If you closely examine the scalpel used in a dermaplaning procedure, it looks like a crossbred between a surgical scalpel and a shaving blade. By aiming the blade at a 45-degree angle and slowly dragging it across your skin, your dermatologist removes dead skin cells, scar tissue, and debris that's dulling your skin and congesting your pores.

Facial skin is exposed to harsh elements and irritants daily. For example, anything from the weather to the ingredients in your creams and lotions can cause flareups. Over time, the dead skin buildup can overwhelm the dermis and cause your skin to look worn out and aged.

It’s worth noting that during a dermaplaning treatment, you won't feel much pain. Experienced dermatologists know the appropriate angle to hold the blade to prevent inflammation or cuts. Also, our dermatologists take great pride in their dexterity and precision. However, you might feel a slight tingling sensation now and again.

After treatment, your dermatologist will soothe your skin with an emollient or humectant. After dermaplaning, patients must regularly apply sunscreen to protect the newly revealed layer of skin. While there isn't any downtime required to heal after the treatment, you might experience slight redness or discomfort several days post-treatment.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a safe and effective form of mechanical exfoliation when performed by one of our experienced dermatologists. The benefits associated with dermaplaning include:

  • Deeper skin product penetration
  • Dead skin cell removal
  • Lightens skin hyperpigmentation
  • Stimulates skin cell regeneration
  • Removes fine wrinkles

The Ideal Candidate for Dermaplaning Treatments

Dermaplaning is typically a low-risk, non-invasive procedure that can be used on a myriad of skin types. If you have a dry skin type, dermaplaning may offer great benefits to your skin’s health. Some groups might be predisposed to experiencing adverse side effects from the procedure. For example, those who suffer from cystic acne should not get dermaplaning due to the heightened risk of infection. The same applies to those who experience active acne flareups.
