Millions of people experience long-lasting effects of their breakouts in the form of acne scars. Unexpected pimples are stressful enough. However, the scars and dark marks they sometimes leave behind are usually worse. Fortunately, there are several acne scar removal treatments that can help to diminish their appearance.

Acne scars are best treated under the guidance and care of a dermatologist. The most common acne scar removal methods are dermabrasion, microdermabrasion and laser therapy. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are best for flat acne scars, whereas laser therapy works well for both flat and raised scars.

Dermabrasion

A dermabrasion procedure is surgical and invasive and usually requires a local anesthetic. During the treatment, a dermatologist uses a strong abrasive device - usually a brush - to resurface the skin and decrease the scars' depth. Dermabrasion is an effective acne scar removal technique, and even makes way for new, smoother skin. Although rather effective, patients usually require several days to heal.

In addition to acne scars, the method is also effective for treating pox marks and scars from illness or accidents. However, it does not work well for congenital skin defects, pigmented birthmarks, burn scars or most moles.

Microdermabrasion

In comparison to dermabrasion, microdermabrasion is less invasive. In microdermabrasion, a dermatologist uses a spray of tiny crystals to makes subtle changes to the skin. In contrast to dermabrasion, there's far less healing time. The skin recovers fully within 24 hours, and there's no surgery or use of anesthetics.

On the downside, microdermabrasion is not effective for deeper issues such as stretch marks, deep acne scars and wrinkles.

Laser Therapy

Laser treatment can help to minimize the appearance of acne scars. During laser therapy, a dermatologist uses a concentrated beam of light to contour regions of acne scars. Different types of lasers are used, based on whether the scars are flat or raised.

On the downside, laser therapy is not suitable for those with light sensitivity, darker skin, active acne or skin sores. Additionally, it is not recommended for patients who are on blood-thinning medications due to the high risk of bleeding during the procedure.

What's the Difference Between Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?

Generally speaking, dermabrasion is only safe for persons with fairer skin. Dermabrasion can lead to scarring or discoloration in people with darker skin. On the other hand, microdermabrasion works well for all skin types and shades.
